Automatic notifications for threads in which members have posted?

Product: Eve Community

Hi All,

Is there a setting in EVE Control panel where I can set a notifications to be on automatically for threads in which someone posts?

For example: New member Sally posts a question. I don't want her to have to figure out how to turn on notifications, I would like to set things so the she gets notifications when someone replies in a discussion in which she has participated.

Is that possible?

Thanks!

Hello,

No, that is currently not possible though we may consider adding that as a feature in a future release.  The idea of having someone automatically subscribed to a topic when they create it, or even defaulting the notification preferences on the posting page so that the user has the option to change their preference while creating the content is not new.  Though its not something we have chose to implement in Eve previously.

If your users do not want to subscribe to new posts they create this could become a very annoying feature for those users really quickly.  Because of this we would likely have a preference on the users profile that would allow them to set their default.  When not set it would default to the setting in the CP set by the administrator.  This way users can override it and not be annoyed if they really dont care to be notified to everything they post to.

Would this setting, in your opinion, apply to new topics the user posts, topics the user replies to, or both?

Another thing you may want to consider taking a look at is our new hoop.la product.  We have already implemented this feature on that application and it works amazingly well.  If you are looking for a modern replacement to Eve I would highly recommend that you give it a once over.  Definitely packed with a lot more features than just the notifications thing mentioned here.

In most of the forums in which I participate, notifications are on by default for any thread in which I post. The standard email  notification typically have a link to turn off the notification so if it is an annoyance, it is easily turned off.

" We have already implemented this feature on that application and it works amazingly well. " ~~~ This seems to suggest that it is conveys more value than annoyance.

I would like  to be able to set the default preference in the Control Panel, but allow users to override the default.

"Would this setting, in your opinion, apply to new topics the user posts, topics the user replies to, or both?"

I would be delighted if you could have both, but I can't see many people making a distinction

Y/N - Notify me about replies to threads I start

Y/N - Notify me about replies to threads in which I post (includes above)

Did I understand the distinction?

Hi Jonmark,
Can you move the existing EVE data over to hoop.la intact including private posts?
We have thousands of images in one forum and links to those images in posts across all of the other forums.  It would be devastating to lose that.

Hello ST,

The existing data would be migrated over:

  • Users
  • Topics, Polls, Albums / Replies
  • Private Topics / Replies
  • Attachments

any references to images by their old URLs within existing messages will not be updated as part of the import.  There really is no good way around this when bringing messages into the new system.  All of the images will be in tact as attachments to the messages that they were posted to, but references within other messages to attachments of different messages will not be updated.

Does that make sense?
