Re: Member moderation and private messaging

Regarding the above topic, it appears that a troublesome troll that had registered and was placed in moderation, was still able to send private messages, some quite offensive and upsetting to the recipient. I did notify the owner (j-pouch.org) and The member was banned and deleted. Apparently, it is not true that members in moderation are blocked from PMs And you need to update your information. The site owner has since given me SuperAdmin capabilities, so I can more quickly deal with troublemakers.

Just wanted to let you know so you are not giving out information that is a false security.

Hi Jan-

Private messages (dialogs) are definitely not subject to content moderation at all, primarily because dialogs are NEVER viewable by admins/moderators. Thus, moderating posts by a user would never impact dialogs.

If you see something in our documentation that says otherwise, please let me know though so we can correct it, but I am fairly confident that we make no such claims anywhere.

Hi Jan-

Sorry, I didn't see that you were talking about Eve. My response assumed you were talking about Hoop.la.

Can you tell me what specific area in Eve is giving you bad information?

It was not the documentation, but the reply I got to this question back in 2013 (that is why I referenced the initial thread). It is still posted and searchable. I had asked because at the time I had only limited Admin functions, and only able to place a member in moderation. The reply stated that moderation would block all types of posting, including private messaging. I know I cannot see PM unless it is reported or I am invited.

The original question did specify Eve.

Thanks.

Hi Jan-

I understand.. I was not trying to say that you misspoke in any way. Can you please tell me which specific area in Eve was giving you erroneous information. You stated that we are giving out erroneous info, so I need to know where to look to see what is wrong.

Thanks!

It was in this question thread from last year:

https://community.hoop.la/s...nd-private-messaging

Perhaps I misunderstood your reply?

Yes, it sounds like you did understand.

This is what I said there:

If a registration is in moderation (not approved), then that person has no member privileges and will not be able to send private messages.

An unapproved member is never a member and has no membership privileges and thus can never send private messages. My comment above was about REGISTRATION MODERATION, not CONTENT MODERATION and is completely factual.

It sounds like you thought that moderating all CONTENT by a user was the same thing... but again private messages are not subject to moderation like that.

Sorry for any confusion there.

To be clear:

-- If you have a troublesome user, I recommend banning or deleting their accounts.

-- Moderating their content (posts) will not stop them from sending private messages (though you could use permissions to prevent them doing that)

-- Content moderation is different from registration moderation.

Hope all of this helps!

Thanks. I guess I was operating under false assumptions for the past year. I did not ask about a moderated registration, since I didn't even know what that was. Apparently, we were talking about two different things, so no, I did not understand you. At that time, all I could do was moderate all content of a user until the site owner could get around to banning a member. Of course, in the interim, there was behind the scenes havoc and I could not understand why. I have just recently been made a super admin, so I can deal with these people immediately.

Thanks for clearing this up!
